Fire resistant safes

A fire can be devastating, and often it is not only the damage to buildings that has consequences, but also the loss of personal belongings, documents and valuables. This is where fireproof safes come into the picture.

What are fireproof safes?

Fireproof safes are specially designed to protect valuables from high temperatures and flames. They are made of materials that are heat-resistant and often feature a double wall of fire-resistant insulation. This ensures that the temperature inside the safe remains significantly lower than the ambient temperature, even during a severe fire.

A fireproof safe is specifically designed to protect its contents from the effects of fire, such as high temperatures, debris and moisture (from fire extinguishing water, for example) for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. The time duration indicates how long the safe must hold before the critical temperature or relative humidity is reached. Depending on the duration of protection, the safe receives a certain classification.

DIN 4102

Note! Some safes refer to a fire-resistant construction according to the standards of DIN 4102. This involves the use of fire-resistant material, conforming to DIN 4102, in the body and door of the safe. This means that fire-retardant materials are used. In practice, a safe with DIN 4102 only offers protection against fire for a few minutes. Tests according to the EN 1047-1 standard also show that safes with this type of fire-retardant material reach the critical temperature within a few minutes. This is far too short and thus cannot be considered fire-resistant. We often see such constructions in fire-resistant filing cabinets and private safes.

Why choose a fireproof safe?

  1. Protection from fire: The main reason to choose a fireproof safe is the protection it provides. Traditional safes often cannot withstand fire, and valuables can be lost as a result. Fireproof safes are tested to different temperatures and can protect your belongings for up to several hours.
  2. Different classifications: Fireproof safes are available in different fire resistance classifications. This means you can choose a safe that fits your specific needs. Whether you have sensitive documents you want to protect from fire, or digital media vulnerable to high temperatures, there is always a solution available.
  3. Water resistance: Some fireproof safes are not only resistant to fire, but also to (extinguishing) water. In a fire, fire extinguishers can often use significant amounts of water to put out the fire, which can also damage your possessions. A water-resistant safe offers extra peace of mind, knowing that your belongings are safe even after a fire.
  4. Ease of access: Despite strong security, a fireproof safe often offers a user-friendly interface. Many models are equipped with digital locks or combination locks that are easy to operate while still providing a high level of security.

Choosing the right fireproof safe

When choosing the right fireproof safe, there are several factors to consider:

  • What do you want to protect? First, determine exactly what you want to store. Paper (P), data (DIS), chemical and/or combustibles, or valuables with financial and/or emotional value.
  • Fire resistance: Note the classification of the safe. Usually the protection is indicated in 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. The longer the time the safe protects your belongings from extremes, the better.
  • Burglary resistance: Is it necessary to have a store of value for storing cash or other valuables? If so, choose a safe that is both burglary-resistant and fire-resistant.
  • Dimensions: A safe should be large enough to hold all your valuables, but also small enough to fit in the desired location.
  • Lock type: Consider the type of lock that suits you best. Digital locks offer convenience, while traditional keys may be preferable for some users.
  • Anchoring: Consider carefully beforehand whether you can anchor the safe in the desired location. Safes often have special anchoring options in the bottom and/or back wall. We recommend anchoring every safe, regardless of weight. The European directive requires that all burglary resistant safes up to 1000 kg must be properly anchored. This concerns safes that protect cash and/or valuables from theft.
More information about anchoring, among other things, can be found on our page ‘Documentation and information safes and storage devices’.
  • Additional features: Some safes offer additional features such as seal or lock options that further protect your belongings from burglary or water.
