10 Tips for Home Work Productivity
More and more people have started working from home and, as things stand, the number of people working from home continues to rise.
Yet there are considerable challenges associated with working from home. At the office, you have the opportunity to retreat to an empty space for a while, while at home you are often stuck with the place you have chosen to work. To stay comfortable and productive while working from home, it is essential to create a number of conditions.
Whether you work from home regularly or only occasionally, a safe, people-oriented work environment is crucial for healthy and effective screen work. Here are some tips to help you be both comfortable and productive:
1. Keep a regular schedule for your working day
Sticking to a regular schedule for the start and end of your working day will help you work much more effectively. At the office, your friends and family usually respect your working hours, but at home, it can be different. They may be more likely to disturb you or expect you to do something for them because you are home anyway. Be aware of how much time can be lost because of this and set clear boundaries if necessary. You can only ask others to respect your time if you do the same yourself.
2. Create your own workspace
Choose a specific room in your home to work in and make that place your personal working environment. Let your housemates know that when you sit there, you prefer not to be disturbed. Working on the sofa or at an unstable kitchen table is not good for your body and can reduce your concentration.

3. Don't forget the importance of exercise
It is in your employer's interest to have healthy and productive employees who work in a sustainable way, thereby improving their performance. Sufficient mental and physical exercise contributes to these sustainable improvements, as does the right height of your computer screen! Using a good monitor arm adjusted to the right height promotes concentrated work.

4. Use the right ergonomic aids
An ergonomic chair and a sit-stand desk provide optimal comfort and allow you to alternate between sitting and standing. It is crucial to regularly move both mentally and physically during your work at the monitor, even if you do not have a sit-stand desk, to end your working day energetically.
In addition, the following accessories are essential for a suitable home office:
- Electrification which is safe at your desk, so there are no cords on the floor that you or family members can trip over.
- Make sure you have good lighting to avoid quick eye strain.
- Use CPU holders to keep your workspace tidy and experience more mental peace while working.
5. Limit distractions
Concentration is necessary when working, whether you are at home or in the office. Make sure you are not distracted by external factors.
Pay attention to the following points:
- Put your smartphone away while working;
- Turn off email notifications on all your devices for minimal distraction;
- Create a quiet working environment, preferably without music or with very soft background noise;
- Apply the Pomodoro technique to better manage your time;
- Start your work when you are fresh and rested;
- Turn off news flashes temporarily or ignore them.
6. Set a daily to-do list
Start your day by making a to-do list for what you want to achieve. Even better, use the Getting Things Done method so that your to-do list is always up to date. If you don't know exactly what to do, it's tempting to do nothing at all. In any case, identify the bigger tasks you want to complete, while smaller chores can be done as time allows.
7. Limit the time you spend on a chore
It is easy to get distracted at this time, especially with challenging or boring tasks. When you find yourself drifting away, set a time limit of 10 or 15 minutes to work on that task, or use the Pomodoro technique. Including an end point often re-energises you. If you really can't go on, take a break and pick up another task. You can always return to the original task later when you feel better.
8. Take plenty of breaks
Working from home doesn't mean you don't need short breaks. Take a walk, enjoy a cup of coffee, watch a piece of news or take some quiet time for your lunch. These moments will help you clear your head for a while. It is also important to realise that prolonged sitting in front of a screen is detrimental to your health, especially if your workplace is not optimally equipped. Advice: take 5-10 minutes breaks every hour and leave your workplace. Short breaks are often more effective than sporadic long breaks. If you apply the Pomodoro technique, these breaks will come naturally.
9. Separate work and private life
It is crucial to make a clear distinction between work and private time. When you are at work, remind yourself that you are working and not just at home. Try not to think "I am working at home", but rather "I am at work". If you also need to be reachable by landline, ask your employer for a separate phone number.
10. Create a well-appointed workspace
A well-ventilated space with a pleasant temperature, sufficient daylight and the ability to concentrate are essential for a people-oriented workplace.
